Thank you all! Didn't realise the welcome messages had started on a whole new page =) What a lovely bunch of birdbrains on this forum! XD

Glad to meet you, and welcome to BYC. Shadrach, who replied to you very early, wrote about roosters that he watched running feral in Catalonia. Their behavior might give you some insights and hope about the interactions between your older rooster and Johnny Cashew (which is a clever name). Best wishes taking care of all your birds!
This article was an absolute pleasure to read and made so much sense regarding the behaviour I have observed from my chickens. It makes me want to free range them on even more pasture eventually, and give them the woods, too. William spent most of his time outside the acre of chicken yard today, but was letting himself back in, so it might turn out that way whether I like it or not! We are fairly remote and on a private gravel road so it's relatively safe for him in terms of human activity.

When I cooped my chickens tonight, I arrived a bit early to observe their sorting behaviour. William's hens clearly still fancy him, and were going to visit him, so I lured Johnny into the big coop with his main hens and then scattered some food around William at the small coop so he could tuktuk his girls over to him. He even mated with one of them! She crouched for him before he even had to do anything so there's definitely still loyalty there.

I ended up cooping him with his mate and a junior hen from our Welsummer batch, as she has been spending most days alone in a holly bush. Maybe they will form a new tribe and things will settle down. <3
