We don't have any chickens now, but are thinking about getting some. We're looking at the possibility of buying a pre-fab coop, to keep about 4 hens.

I'd love to know if anyone has experience working with Urban Coop Company (www.urbancoopcompany.com). I'd love some suggestions of other vendors to work with.

Tacoma-area people: are there local retailers of pre-fab chicken coops you'd recommend?

Welcome to BYC! There’s so many helpful, knowledgeable folks here and I’m sure you’ll find this site a very useful resource. I wouldn’t especially recommend pre made coops, they have a tendency to be flimsy and not last. I’d recommend either building your own or there’s lots of craftsmen and chicken keepers who sell coops that they’ll make to your own specification. Alternatively a few DIY skills can easily transform a sturdy shed into a chicken coop (I got a factory seconds shed on eBay reasonably cheaply). Best of luck with your chicken adventures :D

Hi and welcome to BYC

On this link you'll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

Best wishes
