Brand new but I have been lurking for a couple months. What started out with 1 baby chick is now 3! We have 2 new rescued gals the same age but not as fat and happy as our first. They seem to be adjusting well as our first was a bit of a lap chick. I am learning all I can and wish I had the time to research before my in-laws bought a baby chick for my children. Had the little gal in an aquarium with a heating blanket in my room for 3 days, up all night because of her sad chirp (and thought she would die because she was so little). We have come a long way and she now has a beautiful palace built by my son! The new girls are in need of TLC but we seem to be doing the right things! The darn heat is horrible and my main concern.
Thanks for all the tips and ideas!

Hello from North Texas!!!

-seems like you have a sweet little flock! Enjoy!!

Hi and :welcome

Your chickens sound great. Good luck!
I live in Australia, and the heat gets pretty horrible here in the summer. :p Do you have any trees near your coop? The shade helps a lot, our chickens usually spend the whole season under a bush somewhere keeping cool.

We do not have much shade, but son put up sun blocker that let any breeze in. He wants to put up a fan, but with afternoon thunder storms, not good. I freeze veggies and fruit to add to feed and ice in water. When it was just 1 I could bring her in during heat of day and she is just great around my dogs and cats. The new girls are so afraid of dogs, and 1 keeps trying to flyout and hits the chicken wire. Hoping she settles in.

Hi also from Australia (Sydney). The heat can be awful with a low day time temp of 64oF to a summer high of 104oF (18-40oC). I add ice to their water to help them keep cool. They usually disappear beneath a bush for most of the day but it's winter here now so don't have that problem except when it rains it really rains and usually for many days at a time.

The heat here in Utah is a concern as well!! I spent 2days building a canvas shade barrier (my nice neighbors came to help when they saw me struggling) but e had a wind storm that evening and I had to run out and take it down as I thought I'd lose the coop it was attached to!! Love your frozen fruit idea, I'm also using a mister, but its super dry here....don't know if that would help you as much?

Have you tried misters - it cools the immediate area - also you could freeze water in gal. milk jugs and set them around the yard so the chickens can get close to them if they want to.

Maybe you could just piece together an open a frame with some shade cloth stapled to it, so they have somewhere to get out of the sun.
