I live in Northern Virginia also, in fact it's the first mountain ridge from DC, Bull Run Mountain, not far from Haymarket.
You can't just have one chicken, it needs a playmate. I suggest you checkout the Poultry Auction that's held in Culpepper VA that's held a couple Saturday's a month. We were there a couple weeks ago and had the best time, they had not only lots of chickens of numerous breeds, but also sold pigs, fresh eggs, goats, geese, guineas, rabbits, turkeys, and beleive it or not, guinea Pigs.
