(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My dad and I are the ones caring for our birds. We had a flock of broilers for a summer a few years back, but we started our new flock of laying hens this past June! They've come with many challenges but the rewards far outweigh them.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
11 total: 10 hens and 1 rooster.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Absolutely no clue; we picked our birds up from a man in a downtown area of the city who was raising them in his backyard at about 8 weeks, and he basically gave us the first chickens he could catch! Likely some easter eggers, maybe some black australorps, but otherwise we're just enjoying our random assortment.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love their personalities (to an extent, I'm about this close to culling our rooster) and I just love sitting and watching their behavior. They are such interesting creatures and the way their minds process the world is always a joy to observe. Plus seeing my father become a full blown chicken lover has been fun as well.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I am a college student at the moment which somehow seems to eat up hobbies and spit them out, but I enjoy biking, gardening, and horseback riding.
