Hello!
My fiance and I recently started our farmette and raising chickens. About a year ago we purchased our first birds at a small animal swap. They were young birds (or so we were told) probably about 8 months of age. After doing a lot of research to find which breeds were best suited for where we live and still good at laying, we ended up with a Buff Orpington, two Americaunas and a Black Copper Maran cross. A few months after purchase we unfortunately lost our Maran cross to unknown reasons. Thankfully the other 3 birds showed no symptoms of any illness or disease. Then in July, we decided to increase our flock and purchased through the mail day old chicks. We chose Olive Eggers, Welsummer, Black Copper Maran and Black Laced Silver Wynadotte. About mid January, our pullets started to lay for the first time!! It was very exciting and I felt like a proud parent!
Now our flock numbers 17 birds: 1 Buff Orpington, 2 Americauna, 3 Olive Egger, 3 Black Copper Maran, 4 Welsummer and 4 Black Laced Silver Wynadotte. One of our Olive Egger birds ended up being a rooster instead of a hen but in the end, he's been a welcome addition.
I love our chickens way more than I ever thought I would. Everytime I go out to the coop, I hear their little noises and Schroeder's crowing and it makes me smile! I love collecting the various colors of eggs and feel like it's Christmas or my birthday each time wondering what am I going to get today? Having chickens is so fun and rewarding!!
In addition to our birds, we have two cats (Marshmallow & Smokey) and a black lab named Gunnar. We are hoping to start brooding and raising meat chickens this year if everything works out. I've been using BYC forum more and more lately so finely decided to join and become a part of this valuable community. I'm looking forward to warmer temps and I know all our girls (and Schroeder) are too!
