After a few years of begging I finally convinced my husband that we needed chickens (ducks and turkeys too). I picked up my babies on Wednesday and haven't been productive since.
Thankfully I am a stay at home mom working on a degree. I live in the woods of Idaho. I grew up in Boise and never had the chance of a "farm life" even though I raised chickens one year, ducks the next and then sheep (I brought home bums) the animals were given to people with land before the start of the next school year. I am looking forward to raising the babies and teaching my girls about the simpler things in life. My oldest (13) has a Khaki Campbell duck, the middle (12) has a Broad Breasted Bronze turkey, and my youngest (4) has a Amber White chicken that just melts in her hands. I wish we had 4-H in our small town, the girls would love that! I feel like a kid again with the excitement of the babies!
Hello and Welcome To BYC! Sounds like you have the start to a really nice flock! Great the kids all have their own birds! Not sure if you have seen the main 4-H website, but http://www.4-h.org/ but they do have quite a bit of stuff on-line and some programs where you can check things out at the Extension Service or county 4-H office etc, you may be able to find a club you can join that is farther away that has programs that interest you if oyur town doesn't.
And be sure to check out the BYC Learning Center, lots of good articles on all aspects of chicken keeping. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center And it is always fun to check out your state thread for chicken keeping neighbors https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/8042/idaho
