Hello. I am Michelle and I'm sort of a new chicken owner and homesteader, recently moved to Arkansas from Texas.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Got our first chickens at the end of October 2020. They were supposed to be 2 barred rock pullets and a Dominique cockrel, but you can guess how that ended up (all roos). We kept one Barred Rock rooster and added a Barnevelder pair and three easter egger hens to the small flock in November, and also bought 6 chicks locally at that time.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 12 chickens outside, and some eggs hatching right this minute.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Barred Rock, Barnevelder, Easter Egger, Olive Egger, Midnight Majesty Marans (BCM crossed with Cuckoo). We have hatching eggs for Blue Birchen Marans, Niederrheiner, and Light Sussex so we're anxiously waiting to see how that turns out.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Top on our lists was the self-sufficiency that comes with raising your own dual-purpose birds. We've also been entertained by their antics, and they are great conversation starters. Raising chickens has also given our Autism Spectrum 16-year old a great new interest.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I'm a musician and I teach guitar, we have telescopes and enjoy skywatching, we like outdoors, hiking, boating, and I enjoy working on our small farm.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Our "Brady Bunch" family is down to the last kid, and husband's job wen full-time telecommute with the COVID shut-downs, so we took the opportunity to move up our retirement timeline and resettle in rural Arkansas and start a small-scale homestead. We've currently got 12 chickens, 5 ducks, 4 goats (2 are expecting), 2 livestock guardian pups, 20 hatching eggs, and 1 teenager on our 7-acres.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found the FB group in a search for chicken groups where I might gather (and possibly dispense) wisdom and solutions to problems, as well as see and share day to day chickenry. (that's a word I just made up)
