Greetings All!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My fiance and I are new to owning chickens. Our friends had some before they moved a year ago and we fell in love, and knew we wanted to raise some once we had a place of our own. We got a place last July during a very crazy house-season, and now we've got our chicks (I guess they're pullets now technically). We got them towards the end of February. I'm not quite sure of their age - if I go by when we picked them up at the store, we would estimate they would make them 4 weeks old today. But they look more like six weeks to me (barely any fluff left).
The girls are getting too big for their temporary house brooder so I've been introducing them to the garage set up until we get our coop delivered. Course, with the pandemic, I don't know when that will be now. I need to e-mail the builder.
But! They have a wire run set up in the garage now. I'm monitoring it for the temperature as it's still pretty cold here and I'm not 100% sure they can be out without the heater yet.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Four
(3) What breeds do you have?
2 Easter Eggers
2 Black Australorps
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Just learning at the moment; but I'm loving their mannerisms. It's relaxing to watch them peck around. And adorable when they drink water.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Both of us are Video Gamers.
I'm also into quilting and writing.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
The fiance is an animal tech in a lab for the university. I work in the insurance industry as a Process Analyst.
Our house is a menagerie. We both love animals. He's more into reptiles and birds while I'm into fuzzy creatures and birds. The house occupants currently include:
1 - 12 year old Royal Ball Python
3 - Crested Geckos
2 - Clawed Frogs
Three fish tanks (one shrimp biome, one micro tank, and one misc fish)
2 - Dogs (1 Miniature Pinscher and 1 Border Collie/Blue Heeler/Aussie)
1 - Grey Tabby Cat
4 - Chicks
... we're a bit out-numbered; but we keep them all well fed and housed. So there hasn't been any mutiny... yet.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I've heard of your community from our friend who raised chickens. I decided to join because we have girls of our own now and it's always great to get advice and to share the experience with others.
