I am Bulucanagria. If you're wondering, that means nothing in particular. It was a bit of gibberish that I would spout to avoid cussing at traffic in front of my daughter. In searching for a unique nickname for web use, I latched onto it and so far it's worked. I haven't had to add a number to it yet. I'm the only one (though my bottom isn't made out of springs, 'tis more the pity.)
I am currently residing on a friend's farm, although I will soon be moving back to the suburbs. I hope it is only temporary and I will be back in the country before long. As with so many people right now, everything hinges on employment. I will still be involved in the farm, though not on a daily basis. I hope to get up here a day or two a week.
While up here I have become quite involved in their poultry operations. Nothing on a large commercial scale, as their primary products are sheep and pigs. They do sell some chickens and ducks and keep about 20 of each penned for the customers. We also enjoy having free range birds around. We have about 25 mixed free-range chickens. Basically, when we get a large lot of birds in for the pen, one or two "accidentally" get away from us. This always seems to happen to particularly beautiful or friendly birds. Other than about 5 or 6 RIR's, no two are alike. A real melting pot. We also have two female geese (China Whites, I believe) who are very devoted to one another. Finally, there are the 7 adult Guinea Fowl. Their numbers are down from about 15 this spring, but they hatched 14 keets on Sept. 21 and 20 more on Oct. 26. These were promptly taken from their mothers. I felt like a jerk but research and experience tells me that they had little chance for survival being raised by their mother, especially so late in the season. So far, all 34 keets are alive and cooped in the barn near the adults. Come spring, the door will be thrown open and they can join the others on patrol. It should be interesting and educational, at the least.
Though I will not be actively keeping birds for a while, my interest will continue and I will keep on trying to learn about keeping poultry healthy and happy. On those ocassions when I feel I have something to offer, I will try to contribute what I can, lucidly and politely. Browsing this board indicates it's extensive, informative and well-run. I look forward to being part of the BYC community.
