Hello to all!
I stumbled onto this site while seeking housing options for the newest arrival at our home...what appears to be a friendly, young Leghorn rooster. We have no other chickens, and I only have vague memories from childhood of our neighbor's hens nesting in our stable from time to time. The hubby and I love all animals and have become attached to "George" pretty quickly. We have asked our neighbors (all 3 on our road) and we cannot figure out where he came from. He is extremely sweet and would probably follow us I to the house if we let him! He is tolerant of our 2 large inside dogs, and seemed to bond with my geriatric housecat almost instantly when we let him out for his supervised daily jaunts. George is definitely going to need at least a couple girlfriends if he stays with us...which seems to have decided. His (plus a future harem) housing is the current dilemma. We have a garage that has a 3rd back section that faces perpendicularly from the attached 2 car section, and it can be sectioned off with a heavy sliding barn door. What I would like to do is divide that area with a partition wall with door access (this would be adjacent to a sliding overhead door as well) and a full sized window. We would add nesting boxes and perches; the floor is concrete. There are several local predators, so I would like to allow them to range during the day and come in at night, although I'm not sure how cooperative George will be...at least until he sees his girls going in at night.
Does this sound feasible? I've done alot of searching online and want to do the best I can with him and future additions. Thanks so much for any feedback!
