Welcome to BYC! Have you got any questions now?

(I'd prepare to fence off your garden, if you haven't already. Chickens love tomatoes and squash. They especially love taking a few bites out of one fruit, leaving it to spoil, and moving on to the next one.)

We have the back garden partially fenced off, but I'll let my husband know we need to figure out something more secure before they do any free-ranging.

As for questions, I'm wondering about the first few weeks with the chicks. I know they'll sleep a lot when they're still little, but will they sleep through the night? Will they need fresh food and water at some point in the night? Will they sleep even if a light is on in the room? They'll be in our home office/school room for the first week or two since we're dealing with very heavy rains at this time, so we do use the computers and read in here at night.

Welcome to BYC! Chickens are a great learning experience for all ages. I have a mixed flock of chickens and ducks. The people on BYC love their birds and I'm sure you will too!

I'll always suggest Muscovies for people interested in getting ducks. Their large body size matches their large personality! Nothing cuter than a 'Scovy tail wag.

Chicken and duck spam is always welcome! Thanks for the heads-up on Muscovies. I've heard they are pretty quiet, too, which would be a good thing for our neighborhood. Most of our neighbors are either friendly and peaceful, or they're simply the live-and-let-live types. I certainly don't want to push anyone's boundaries, though!
