Valentines day 2013 my husband made a dream come true with a chicken coop and 5 hens that needed a new home. They gave us eggs for several years then retired. Our next group of three hens had a run in with a dog, one survived. Two years ago, a friend gave me 3 chicks that were about 6 weeks old. I wasn’t very savvy raising chicks. We lost them to a raccoon.

Spring 2020, we (or maybe just me) decided to get chicks. We got 3 barred rock chicks and 3 golden sex links on the 1st day of spring. They were one week old! I had wanted 5 but couldn’t decide which breed would be better with 2 or 3. Three of each breed seemed like a safe decision. They lived upstairs in a plastic container until they were about 4 weeks old.

I love the curiosity of chickens, the way they run after treats. I am looking forward to eggs.
My other hobbies are gardening, bike riding, and baking.

I am married to Martin. We have 2 adult children. Our daughter has been our roommate since graduating from college in 2018. Our son lives and works in Austin. We have a Great Dane named Emma and a black cat, named Siah. I’m a school nurse for SAISD.

I’ve known about BYC for a few years. I joined because I hadn’t raised chicks before and needed lots of guidance.
