Greetings!

Hello Miguel, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

cold tolerant chickens. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
I'm in NY and we can have pretty cold, snowy winters. I prefer tighter combed birds. I would recommend trying to source some Chanteclers. It is a breed I hope to be dabbling in when I retire.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Dry as possible is definitely the key for a healthy coop and birds, so as cold as this sounds, you need good venting all year round in your eaves! You might want to stop by your state thread of Alaska and chat with your BYC neighbors.... https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/north-to-alaska.84141/

Make yourself at home here, best wishes with your soon to be new flock!

Hi Miguel, you've gotten some great tips so help that helps. That article by @Alaskan is a really good one and the members over on the Alaska state thread should be a good source of info. Make yourself at home here and best wishes with all your plans!

Howdy!

My article on cold weather housing has a bunch of Alaska pointers:

Of course, with you being in SE, it is way warmer there!

So, you should plan the most for ice and rain, not snow. A huge and fully covered run would probably be wonderful.

Also, you should think of how to feed the chickens. From what I understand, feed is even more expensive over there, since you are off the road system. Chickens can forage for much of what they eat, but depending on where you are, they might need a guard dog to forage safely.
Thank you very much!
