Hey everyone, stopping by to say hello!

I recently decided to get chickens because well, why not? My attempts at getting them in a feed store failed a few times so I called a friend who runs a historic farm, Coggeshall Farm Museum, in Bristol, RI and got 6 heritage breed chicks from him (special favor for my 4 year old daughter who he loves).

I also decided to get her a couple of silkie chicks so she'd always have a super fluffy cuddly friend. When I went to pick up the silkies they were short and felt bad so they threw in 2 RI Red (what hubby wanted) and 2 Americauna chicks as well. So needless to say we got a little more than we bargained for.

We're hoping to keep a heritage rooster as long as the neighbors are ok since the farm wants eggs back next year if we can (a trade since they bring in new blood as often as possible) so the RI's will have to go so as not to cause confusion or cloud the lines, but I think my husband is going to take them to work where he used to have polish fancies. Everything else is pretty distinguishable egg wise.

I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions and I'll try and post pics later. These guys are in my house for now which is pretty smelly but they are doing great, plus my dogs are getting used to them which is very important.

I also have 3 dogs, 2 miniature horses, a barn cat who's pretty old so there's a new oops kitten coming as soon as he's old enough, and 2 leopard geckos. I guess I like chores ;)

Hello and :welcome
BYC has a great learning center!
What do you do with your minis? I have always kind of wanted one.
Good luck with your flock!

Emma,

One of them is trained to drive and hardly qualifies s a mini, he's an almost 10.5 hand Shetland who will except a rider as well, just needs training. He's my baby. At 90 lbs I can get on him, it's just slightly comical. I got him so my daughter could learn to ride. The other is basically just there, we're enemies since he broke my foot last year. I basically haven't done anything with them though since the one broke my foot within 2 months of getting them and I've had a string of bad luck since (broken foot, car accident re-breaking foot, broken arm, foot surgery, looking at another foot surgery...). I'm honestly not sure if I'll be able to keep them since I feel bad that I can't work them and have to have my husband do most of the barn chores :(

The chickens and dogs are completely manageable, but I'd really hate to see Harley (my Shetland) go and they really do better in pairs so it's kind of a can't have one without the other deal.
