I waited as long as possible to ask, but I’m too curious. I am 99.9% sure this is a rooster, much to our chagrin. He’s beautiful but at 14 weeks is pretty aggressive. Always has been feisty.

Wren was a ‘meal maker’ chick from Meyer and I was hoping to share eggs… but if he doesn’t start behaving we may be sharing meat. Would like ideas on breed and/or what coloring you see even if he is just a mutt. And confirmation on cockerel?

Darn, the Meal Makers are supposed to be layers, but he looks like an Easter Egger cockerel. Too bad he is not well behaved.
I think the color would be blue barred with red leakage. I don't think he is light enough to be splash and lavender would dilute out any red, but that is just a guess.

He looks like a cockerel based on the red comb and wattles. He also has red leakage coming in patchy. I'm no expert though so wait for others to weigh in. If you can keep cockerels I'd say give him another week or so to settle down.

I have three and they all went through a "cock" phase around the same age. Just stand your ground and don't be afraid to give him a thump when it's warranted. Mine settled down around 16ish weeks, if he doesn't settle down by then off to freezer camp he goes. Good luck, he's a handsome boy.

That’s good to know! We have children, the youngest is 9, and a sort of small dog that gets let out into the enclosure, so I need him to not try to kill us!

We technically can’t have roosters here. We live on 2 acres in a culdesac kind of far back from the road and so far don’t have any neighbors to complain. If the city comes and says anything, I’ll send him to the farm and pretend to get rid of my excess hens until it’s safe to bring them back. I don’t really care what the city says, going to feed my family! Hah

I have two dogs and none of the chickens seem to care. Even when the cockerels were being 'cocky' they never bothered the dogs.

I know, I was really hoping to add some blue/green layers to my flock so I’m disappointed. I’ve really loved not having to worry about eggs being fertilized, but since we live in the woods and their larger ‘day’ enclosure is not covered, I’m also kind of hoping maybe he will help protect them from owls and hawks.

He’s quite beautiful though! Adding another pic as well of the Great Horned Owl baby that we watched grow and fledge. The only reason I was holding it was to put it back under its nest tree and off of my front porch! Beautiful but also potentially deadly to my chickens.
