Greyhounds and Chickens?

Thanks for all your input guys, your opinions have really helped with her training. Its nice to know I can turn to you for help! She's doing so much better and barely looks at the chooks any more, I think she now knows that she is never going to be able to get to them so has given up trying haha. she keeps the cats away that's for sure!

Hey all!
Bit of an update on our girl if anyone is interested in knowing! We can now let the chickens free range and have her off leash as long as shes supervised, she doesn't really care for them anymore, some of the chooks walk right up to her and she doesn't flinch! have also taught her to lie in her bed and sit! She has come so far in just six weeks, I can only imagine what she will be like in time with more extensive training!thank you all for your input and opinions it has really helped with her training!

I think it's awesome that you were able to get them to coexist so nicely! Gives me hope because I always have wanted a greyhound but assumed it would be unsafe for my cat and chickens. I just learned they are good with house cats (my old cat doesn't run anyway, sounds like they would be couch buddies) and now I have seen your thread which makes me think it could be a real possibility. Might I ask what your training process was? Did you basically do the "leave it" training that another person recommended?

I know I'm late to this discussion but it is very relevant to my situation. I just got 8 chicks and I have one greyhound. I am trying to get him used to the girls while they are tiny. He is not allowed around them by himself and probably never will be. The brooder is on a table so he can see them but can't get at them. We recently lost our other greyhound and will probably be adopting two more in July. When these chicks move to their coop, it is in a different fenced part of the yard but I hope I can let the dogs roam around when I'm down there without incident. So far, I have not decided to let them free range but if I do, I guess I'll keep the dogs out of the area where the chickens will be. I pray this works out well but seeing it can be done has been encouraging. The picture with your grey and a chick drinking from the same bowl is wonderful.

Congratulations on adopting a retired racing Greyhound. My sister has adopted several over the years. She said they are delightful dogs. Being sighthounds they like to chase things. She said they are also couch potatoes and very loving dogs.

Thanks for the advice but we aren’t actually new to greyhounds but we are new to chickens. We’ve had greyhounds for many years. And yes, they are wonderful dogs, although they do like to chase things and if chasing, they can almost always catch whatever they are running after. A lot depends on their prey drive and training. Our current boy had a serious prey drive when we got him but he’s a senior dog now and seems more curious than interested in catching. He seems completely uninterested in the chicks, so far. But that’s why the coops were built in a completely fenced off (from the house) part of the yard. We knew we’d have more greyhounds over time and wanted to have separation whenever possible. Thanks!
