Grit and Calcium options and substitutes

hello again .....

i tried giving them duckweed today ... they didnt seem to like it very much ... i even tried to mix it with their food but they jus ignored it and only by mistake they gobbled up a few ...... so wat can i do to make them like sumthing new that i introduce ???....

and had a heck of a problem with one today .... it ate too much of chicken chick pellets and it all got stuck in its throat ....all mashed up .... i tried so hard and sumhow it was able to swallow it ... i jus hope it can continue on ...... wat can i do if it happens again in future ??

Go to the search/discussions bar at the top and type in Crop Inpaction. This will bring up a whole lot of information for you. (A chicken's "throat" is called a "crop". This should give you lots of information and answers.

The food was stuck in the mouth and throat itself , before reaching the crop .... it was all sticky and all

you should be feeding dry crumbles not wet and be sure it is down where they can eat at all times or they will eat too much and choke like this.

If you offer a new food often they will become used to it and more likely to sample it. Mine didn't want to try it much at first either. Now they love it and tend to eat it first when offered with other foods. Now that it's cooling off here for winter the duck weed is not as prolific so they won't get to eat it as much.

GrandMa bird is right, keeping food in front of them at all times will help them not gorge themselves. I've seen a bird suffocate from stuffing so much food down it's throat if couldn't breath. It was a dove that gorged on my horse's flax seeds! Of course flax seeds have a coating on them that gets sticky when it gets wet so maybe that was why the dove suffocated? Anyway, I hope your quail was OK.

Yeah , the quail is fine Alhamdu lillah ..... it runs towards me wen i enter the room to feed it and even eats from my hand .... i will bring some more duckweed 2mrw and try to feed them daily

Does anybody know if using crushed coralline lime would work as a calcium/grit substitute? I know people eat a refined version of this, all it is is coral reef that has been crushed.
