Grit for day old chicks?

This was my first time hatching and I didn't give them grit until they were about a week old. Next time, since they will be on pine bedding, I will give it to them from day one. I just put it in a flat tupperware dish (like ones for sandwiches). They take it when they need it and also like to use it for dust bathing. I use the grit you would give parakeets. You can get it from Walmart for $2.

Is this because they eat at the pine bedding?

I am starting my second flock and the chicks I have this time are much better foragers and I’ve seen them pecking at and eating bedding specks.

I just got some chick grit today because they’ve been eating the bedding but the package says not to feed them grit til 2 weeks. Since I have them on pine shavings is it safe to give them chick grit early?

I think my chicks are around 3 or 4 days old
