Grit Question

At what age can they have normal grit, instead of chick grit? The grit's diameter is about one millimeter. I'm planning on stealing sand from my school's triple jump or long jump pit until they can have normal grit(I know, I'm a bad kid.

).

I was told 8 weeks by a TSC employee. Not sure if that is accurate but what I was told

I also wanted to know. My local feed store did not have chick grit so I bought regular grit and tried to grind it down. It ened up being more of a gritty powder. Is this Ok or should it be larger. We rescued 3 chicks and have never had chicks before. Do I just sprinkle a little on the food every day?

Coarse sand or parakeet grit works well. You will have to judge when they can swallow the big stuff. If they will free range as adults, they will get enough that way.........Pop

O.K., so at what point do you start giving them grit? Do they need it from the start?

I was told by a very knowledgeable feed store last year that you can switch from chick grit to regular grit at 12 weeks. This is when I switched last year.
