I'm at my B&SIL's house in the South Okanagan for a few days, dealing with the grief of losing my nearly 18 year canine sidekick last week. While we are here we took a quick drive across the border so that I could pick up some Sweet PDZ, which I cannot get in Canada, along with a few other choice products which my ridiculous government feels it should protect me from.
Aaaannnyway. The local country store in Washington has way more chicken stuff than our local UFA or feed stores and now I'm finding myself frustrated - as usual. It seems to me like any time I begin a new hobby etc, the equipment, supplies and such that would make it easy are impossible to find or hugely expensive to get in Canada or to Canada. So very maddening!!
One thing I was struck by was the 3 sizes of grit on the shelf. The grit that I could find locally isn't much different than sand but the grit they had for pullets and for layers were much bigger than that. The layer grit was almost the size of the type you might use to add drainage to an indoor potted plant, maybe a bit bigger than 1/8" stones.
Do I need to go looking for larger grit somewhere?
My birds are penned and I do not yet (building a hoop coop currently) have pasture access as we are unfenced and have neighbouring bird dogs. They are taking the sandy grit offered and I do add dirt to their sandbox regularly which they pick through.
