You need grit if your chickens do not have access to sand and rocks. Egg shells are a good source of calcium (like oyster shell) but too soft to grind food which is what the grit is for. Hope this helps!
Can I fill a smaller feeder with the grit and put it in the coop or should I throw it out all over the coop? I was figuring I was going to have a feeder with chicken scratch mixed with shells, a container of grit, a bowl with veggies changed out once in the morning and then throw a little of those three in the coop for the chickens to find. Does this sound okay? The girls come home this week.
