Grits?

I am really from Washington State and never heard of it until I moved to Florida and met my husband. Many people from the west and the north would not have heard about it until they have been to the southern states. It's VERY VERY SOUTHERN food. At first I HATED it! Couldn't stand the taste of it but after cooking it so much due ot my family loving it, I started getting used ot it and finding ways to make it that suits my taste.

Grits are yummy. They are also a corn product (old fashioned grits are made by drying the corn kernels and then grinding them to just the right consistency so they cook up like a bowl of Cream of Wheat--but sweeter), so use them in moderation--corn is like candy to birds, so they will seriously overdo it. If you don't have starter feed till morning, see if you can't give them a mix of grains you do have around--maybe some wheat (white will do in a pinch) flour mixed with oats mixed with grits would be an adequate snack. Supplement liberally with greens, and they should make it till morning!
 
P.S. There's a really great cookbook called "Gone with the Grits" that has dozens of wonderful recipes that use grits. Several of them are in our regular meal rotation, we like them so much.

On a side note, we bought the recipe book in South Carolina at the annual "World Grits Festival." Bet ya never heard of that either!

Folks we are so off topic here, LOL. **But, as an aside, no self respecting Southerner eats grits as a cereal with (gasp!) sugar! LOL. Salt, pepper and butter or as my DH does, mixes in soft fried eggs with his.

Chickens need granite grit for their gizzards in order to grind their feed. If they only eat chick starter, they dont need it till they are eating other things that require grinding.

I grew up eating grits for breakfast and I love grits with fried fish. yum!
