Grizzly Man diaries

Hmm, I read that he stayed later to look for a sow that he couldn't find, and his girlfriend flew in there for those two extra weeks to help him look, and, yeah, the salmon were all gone, the bears were getting ready to den up, and they were hungry. He named the bear that killed him "Ole'y" (because the bear was so old). He did have a pretty bad potty mouth, makes me wonder if he managed to control it when he went to the schools, but I would guess so. I thought it was cool that he collected bear fur from the bushes to take back to the school kids in California that he was doing a presentation for. I would've loved to have had a clump of grizzly bear fur from an Alaskan grizzly.

He was cited on several occassions by the Rangers for having food left out in coolers and his camp left nonsecure. He was intentionally baiting the bears to come close for the food. By my understanding of some the official reports they do consider this behavior as 'feeding' the bears.

I was being facetious when I said he fed the bears. He was eaten, thus feeding the bears. Sorry, not a very nice thing to say. But yes, he was cited for leaving coolers out and even having his coolers in his tent. Brown bears are apex predators and not to taken for granted.

Thanks Miss P I never heard it but doesn't surprise me that he did it.

Mom'sFolly LOL got ya he fed the bears, got to laugh or you cry.

Chicknmania, It said on the movie that he had trouble of some sort at the airport and that he went back and he wasn't too upset because a sow and cub that he new was missing and he could look for her. But origanally there was some mix up at the airport.

there was another show. It was on PBS I believe. I am hoping someone who saw the grizzly man might have also seen the other show being it's a similar genre.

It was about a man who went up to the AK wilderness, built a small cabin and lived there. He meant to build it and stay a season or a year to see if he COULD do it. He ended up loving it and lived there most of his adult life. They guy wrote a journal and video'd himself...

does anyone know the show series i am talking about?? The guy who did it eventually passed away from age or something.

Zookeeper you expressed my opinion to the tee, I have also wondered if his girlfriend might have been on her menses at the time... also I understood that trouble @ the airport was the reason they went back & that he wasn't disturbed because he wanted to go back for the reasons you said (missing sow & cub).

Yes, I saw the PBS show. It was wonderful. The guy lived on his own for literally years, only having his food and mail flown in. He reminded me of some of the old guys around when I grew up. Tough as nails, kind but crochety, independent as they come.

I saw both shows...the grizzly man one and the old man on PBS who built a cabin and wood bowls and spoons...he was neat to watch too.

Can't think of the name though...

I have been watching the show and like it. I also saw the movie a few times. The footage of the wildlife is very good and he is good on camera (when his message is edited in a certain way).

That being said, IMHO the man was very talented but would not have had a show if not for his horrible death being captured on audio tape with his girlfriend screaming and waiting for the inevitable, which was then turned into a movie of sorts. He had no show or contract for a show during his life (correct me if I'm wrong here) and it sure didn't appear to me that he would have been capable of dealing with all of the people and processes that would be necessary to produce and market a show. Alot of people have trouble letting people use footage of themselves breaking the law to make a profit. Many of the people who were interviewed in the movie seemed to be his benefactors who obviously liked him and his passion for what he was doing enough to support him financially.

The Grizzly Man Diaries that are on now avoid the man's philosophy nearly totally - Which I am pretty sure would upset him because he appeared to see the furthering of his way of thinking as his purpose for being. I would bet that he would like the show about as much as he would the movie.

I also think it is wierd that they seem to speculate (both in the movie and show) which of the bears killed him - it is just not possible to know. The men who retrieved the remains shot bears that did not leave the area when they arrived (after how many days). They removed the human remains from their stomachs and anything that would be of value to a poacher (I guess this is standard practice although there seems not to be a problem with poaching in the park) and they were left to rot, I doubt much of an effort was made to match them to Tim's footage.

I wish that the rangers had found a way to enforce the laws more effectively (I know they are spread very thin) and gotten the man some help, then maybe he would be alive today to use his talents more effectively.
