Grocery Stores

FDA does not allow farmers to feed hogs waste food anymore. I remember that when I went to catholic school that they had farmers pick up the waste. But that was 40 years ago.

I am not sure if those regulations would cover a grocery store giving away food for consumption by livestock. But then who is going to tell them. It is legal if the food is reheated to a certain temperature and I believe there are some small hog farmers now doing this.

We brought home some kale and spinach from a store the other day but the chickens just did not seem interested in the greens. The ducks ate it though.

Dumpster diving though tacky, I think is legal. Police do it all the time searching for evidence. Once you discard trash it is no longer wanted. I think some cities have ordinances against it. But when we lived in the Keys we saw people with nice cars and trucks dumpster diving all the time.

I remember walking with some friends behind WD on Big Pine Key one day and some friends saw a homeless man feeding crackers to the pigeons that he got from the dumpster. They commented how cute it was he was feeding them. Until I told them he was just fattening them up...

I tried walmart, Kroger, but everyone says, I am sorry it is against store Polecies.

I think they are worry that somebody eat the old stuff and turn back on them and sue them.

I asked at 3 grocery stores and Walmart, they all said no.
And I have a friend that works at one of the grocery stores.
She raises rabbits and said she would also love to have the old produce, but it's against the law to give it away or sell it.
Also, all the dumpsters are locked up, so......no dumpster diving for me.

It's really ridiculous! So much is wasted! Supposedly to protect people from eating spoiled food, but really!

I have done this with a grocery store out here in the boonies, I told the manager I would only take food items to feed some pigs, clean up and be respectfull, the store had 4 huge dumpsters in a chain link area lock up, I got a key and picked up twice a week and it was great for a long time, I gave him some of my cured bacons and ham one year and he has been a good friend ever since. Moral of the story, just be cool.
