Opened the box, took out the chicks and gave them plain ole starter feed and water.

OR, opened the bator, took out the chicks and gave them plain ole starter feed and water.

Haven't lost a chick yet for failure to thrive...

I've never heard of it, and had to read all the posts to define what it was.

So yea we don't use it. Just chick starter and water, but I haven't mail ordered any birds.

Guess I'm just a little funny about things like this. but I figure if it was really needed nature would have put it in the yolksac.

I never heard of Grogel either until reading this thread. For my last batch of chicks I just followed the instructions from the hatchery. About a tablespoon of sugar to one quart of water. Make sure you dip every chick's beak in the water and make sure it drinks. Use a chick starter feed. I haven't lost any.

I ordered the gro-gel from Ideal and they forgot to put it in the box.

All 30 of my chicks are fine and healthy without it.

We tried Grogel Plus B today on my childrens 4H broiler chicks. Worked out nice for us because the chicks had been so long without food or water. I can't hardly water them at the fairgrounds or in the car during the ride home. I put some in the box with them and they loved it. The only real benefit I was seeking was a way to get some water in them as soon as I could, and it seemed to work fine. I had three dollars in it. It is designed for shipping purposes. They loved it. My daughter said "Daddy it is like chicken ice cream". Not sure about all the benefits they list, but I am confident that it provided good hydration when they needed it most. Super easy to use. I will use it again for this purpose.
