Hey all!

We are getting ready for county fair season and we have a white Orpington we need to clean up. What shampoo/conditioner do you recommend and I have also seen something about a spray to help retain the shine? Looking for products because I'm pretty clueless with this, thank you!

Conditioning begins long before showtime arrives and consists of parasite control, good nutrition, protection from sun and weather, etc..... Your white orpington will need a whitening shampoo that is lanolin based to protect the feathers from fraying during the drying process. If this type of shampoo is not available in your area then obtain a whitening shampoo, preferably a horse shampoo called "Quick Silver" for light colored horses and also a lanolin based horse shampoo called "Corona". Wash with the Corona shampoo first to remove all the dirt and feces, lathering the bird down to the skin and rinse thoroughly. The Quick Silver is a purple colored shampoo and will stain the bird if put directly on the feathers without first lathering the shampoo in your hands. Depending on the size of your bird you'll need to place a nickel to quarter sized drop of the whitening shampoo in the palm of your hand. Have the bird's feathers already wet and ready for shampoo to be applied, NEVER APPLY SHAMPOO TO DRY FEATHERS! After lathering the whitening shampoo in your hands until no concentrated spots remain, apply the shampoo to the outer surface of the feathers only. Apply from the head down to the tail with the direction the feathers lie, do not get into the under fluff. Once the lather is applied to the entire outer surface let stand for just a couple of minutes then rinse completely and thoroughly, then wrap the bird in a large towel, like a burrito, to remove the excess moisture from the feathers. Then place the bird in a clean cage, preferably in the sun if it is not too hot, to dry. This should result in a brilliantly white bird that is ready for the show.
