The boxes are under the eve and rain does not fall on the boxes at all. Also I have a neighbor that runs a feral cat farm next door and they come in my yard every now and then. I need to be able to see the boxes and chase the cats away. We have no really hidden spaces in our backyard it's all wide open.
 
I still haven't been able to figure out why they want to lay where they do.

Mine all like the same box. I use different types.. I have three that are hand shopping baskets tie-wraped to an raised wooden frame. They like the red one. Two are deep plastic storage bins set on the floor. They like the blue one. I only have 7 hens laying at this time. So go figure...
