Grow Your Own Fresh Greens All Year.

Very cool to grow your greens! I think that we could try this in the winter, as once the snow is here, nothing but white!

Our chickens will be thrilled!

I would like to do some herbs too, but the grasses would be great for the chickens!

On a similar thread-

When my kids were little we tried an experiment and it worked perfectly for this.

Using an old pair of pantyhose, stockings etc. ..cut off any size length you like. Or substitute a cheese cloth bag. stuff a mixture of saw dust//wood shavings and grass seed (or other seeds) into the section and tie it off securely, leave enough string to hang this from if desired. It should be solidly packed, enough so to stretch the weave in the nylon. Soak in water over night. drain and place the ball in a plastic bag. let sit for several days adding a bit of water daily as needed to soak the ball but not standing is water. You should begin to see green hairs sticking out thru the nylon in a couple days.. you can then hang these little turf balls for picking..roll them out on the ground etc. When they are picked clean you can start again, break them open and re seed. Can also be used to repair turf divits as necessary.

Our house is 78 in the summer, and about 68 in the winter. I don't have any problem with things sprouting at those temps.

I have 6 chickens, so a jar of sprouts will fill two suet feeders. Depending on what other fun things I give them, they usually have the suet feeders empty in 30 minutes, sometimes sooner.

If you have a Health Food Store in your area, there are usually bulk bins with fresh wheat berries and other types of sprouting seeds.

On line for sure there should be lots of places to get such things.

I am thinking of making a box like that. And planting it with winter rye grass since it grows so good here all winter.

I had a real

moment this morning.

The past few Wednesdays I make cheese, from the goat milk I get from milking on Tuesdays. Anyhow, it is hard to heat milk to 200 degrees and not scorch it on the bottom even stirring it constantly. So... I woke up with this great idea! Make a sort of double boiler with two big pans and put something on the bottom to keep the pan with the milk from setting directly on the bottom of the other pan.

I used my canning pot, and the normal pan I use for heating the milk. It worked great!! I didn't even have to stir the milk at all!

Of course this is not a new idea, and I am surprised I didn't think of it before now!

We have a few of those, that are not too far away. I will go there and see what I can get.

Thanks for the idea! We live in Phoenix and moving to New River. We will have no grass on the property. I was trying to figure out if I could grow a 12x12 square off the ground some where, just so I can give our hens some greens. I think this is a great idea and I plan on experimenting. Thanks again!

Great idea! Glad you thought about it. I would like to eventually get 2 goats. But I dont think the hubby really wants them. He said we can have chickens and dogs.
