Our chicks will be arriving in about two weeks. Our local feed store (and pretty much every book we've read) suggests plenty of water right off the bat, to the point of nothing but water for the first few hours, then add chick starter feed. The hatchery, however, recommended giving the chicks GrowGel, which to me looks like a gloppy version of what airplanes unload from their restroom facilities.

Has anyone used this stuff? Is it worth the extra expense? Or should we stick to plenty of water and then feed, like we planned?

Never used it and I have had chicks shipped to me before. I think it's just something to sell, not something to buy...but that's my opinion. If I think the chicks need anything extra, I just put electrolytes/vitamins in their water...it's a little yellow and white bag I get from my local TSC.
