Growing fodder for chickens

I feed home grown fodder to all my critters (except the dogs tho even they steal some from the horses). My chickens and rabbits love the stuff. You can feed just sprouts (2-3days old) to your chicken tho I like to give mine all the greens the 7 day cycle makes.

I found an idea on the web for growing grass inside the chicken run without letting the chickens eat it all or scratch it up. I thought it was so cool I added it to my Pinterest wall. I think I could devote a corner of the run to this (during the spring and early summer at least) and really green up the run and give my chicks some healthy greens to munch on.

That is a really cool idea. I am going to try to put one of my fodder trays in my run with some wire on top and see if that works. Thanks for sharing!

This is an awesome idea!! Think I'll try to put a small one together for my girls till I can get a bigger run built.

As far as sprouting goes.... I have tiny root sprouts in my deluxe bird seed mix! So excited!

I just made me one of these as a 2 ft x 4 ft frame of boards and put 1 inch hardware cloth on top. Just sowed some PlotSpike oats under yesterday!

Hoping it starts sprouting!

You used one inch hardware cloth? I think the idea of 1/2" hardware cloth was not only to keep the chickens from scratching it up but from reaching through and eating the greens down so short that they die. I know their heads can't fit through, if they're all grown up, but their beaks will fit and reach down almost to the ground if you used 2x2 lumber.

Just gave my girl her first fodder brick and she loved it! she went crazy picking seeds out of the grass but didn't seem to interested in the grass itself oh well the dogs sure enjoyed it

Great idea. I tried spreading bird seed in our gravel and turning it under hoping some of it would sprout but of course the chickens turned it all up. This is something I'll have to consider.
