Growing fodder for chickens

On pumpkins the eye should be in tjhe tip of the seed. You should be able to take 10 seed when you do the germination test and see if there is a major difference. I don't think that pumpkins need soil or scarification.

When you say you can get Whole Wheat grain at walmart in buckets...where at in walmart? Garden section? Food Section? I have looked I am either blind or ours doesnt have it. Our feed store has werid hours and its hard to make it there before the close....does anyone know if tractor supply carries wheat or barley? Or any grain that will work in these systems...i have been reading and want to try this...esp with winter coming i think the girls will like some green.

Yes cut it. Lay the bagdown on one side and split the top side. I haven't tried sprouting seed but I have done that with a bag of potting soil for a planter for tomato and pepper plants. The pans at Sams only cost about 25 cent each. I use the pans after I have used them as drip pans in my grill.

I tried with barley and so far it didn't go well! I would say only 1% of barley in the tray was sprout!! I thought I did something wrong, so I tried one more time, and it was the same. I will try wheat and see if I have more luck with it!! :(

Was it by chance malted barley? I talked to a guy at a brewery about it and malted barley won't sprout.

Pearled barley (the kind you get in the grocery store for cooking) will not sprout either.......make sure you're using barley that is intended to be fed to animals. Barley seed that is intended to be planted for a crop may have been treated with a fungicide and you don't want to feed that to your chickens.

I know for sure that it's not pearled barley!! I attached a picture of the barley tag that I bought! I don't know much about barley so I get whatever they have at the store! I am planning to buy some wheat if they have some! Does it matter what kind??

no, it doesn't as long as it's for feed, an not choppped or steam rolled or anything. I can't get whole wheat here, only chopped :( So I've been using some I buy at the coop, but it's expensive. I'm trying out a new feed store though and I have high hopes!!

looks like it should have sprouted. Where did you buy it? I have had no luck finding anyone that carries barley.
