Growing fodder for chickens

I saw somewhere in the beginning of this thread that one can find grains at a brew shop. My father in law brews beer and I'm wondering if I could feed the spent grains to my chickens? I realize I could not use them to grow fodder, but would they be ok to feed?

Of course You can give anything to chickens, well most anything, I throw all sorts of stuff out in the compost, they will scratch through and find tidbits. I'm not sure how nutritious it would be, maybe it would be like Fermented feed!

Hi Everyone, what a great thread!

The only grain I could find to try making fodder for my 6 girls where I live at the moment was purple prairie barley. Has anyone tried this?
Kind of weird quoting and answering my own post lol BUT so far I have had success with Organic Non GMO purple prarie barley. My methods are different though to what I've read. First I soaked it for 12 hours then I drained and put it right in the container for it to grow. INSTEAD OF WASHING I spray with it a spray bottle misting it to keep it moist and just drain of the extra water. Day 2 and I have tons of root growth. I keep it in a north facing window.

I didn't think about keeping it in a bucket until after it starts sprouting - I'll definitely give that a try. My seeds float everywhere when I water and it drives me nuts. Lol
Consistent temps makes them grow faster. Of you're growing I doors, it'll take 3/4 days for growth. If you're keeping it in the frigid temps, it'll take a bit longer. Mine takes about a week because of te California fluctuations in our winter so far.

The brand is Lockwood seed and grain, Its just called a 4way seed mix. It sprouts very quickly however I don't really see 4 different types of grain, it all looks the same to me.
