Ok so mt fodder is growing it is about three inches tall, not all of it sprouted though anyone know why all of it didnt sprout? The seed is litlle less then 1/2in thick, I soak three times a day for a minute then drain well, room temp is between 75-80 degrees I cant get it cooler, I have a fan blowing on them to circulate the air and I still have the fuzzy siderweb like white mold that I cant get rid of. Any help would be great.
All of the seeds do not usually sprout. The seeds that don't will get trapped in the roots of those that do and the birds enjoy them as well. I found that sprouting in a Sprouter system like the Victorio first before moving the sprouts to my growing trays (see my profile for links to my system explained) helped to get more seeds to sprout, also using a better quality seed. Some cheap wheat seeds I would get 40% or less yo sprout, but when I began using organic wheat seeds I started getting about 90% sprouting.
Not sure if it is cheep barley seed I buy it at the local grainery for $15 for a 50lb bag, I looked at your system I just cant afford to buy anything extra right now.
I had very little luck getting barley to sprout worth a poo for me. In my experimenting the cost difference of cheap vs quality seeds ended up being better with quality seeds because so little of the cheap seed sprouted compared to the quality seed...in the end I got more than double sprouts from the better seed.
My chickens got wheat grown fodder for the first time 2 days ago. At first they walked around it like it was a suspicious bomb in their run until the lead rooster took a peck at it. Turns out the "bomb" didn't explode so the hens followed his lead soon after. I still found some left over green blades in their run yesterday. We'll see how it goes again in a few days when the next batch is ready to go.
My fodder will be 7 days tomorrow so ill be feeding it to my girls tomorrow. It still has the white fuzzy mold but I read that it wont harm my girls so im ok with it. Ill start a new batch tomorrow and use 1/4 inch seed layer instead of 1/2 inch maybe that will help with the mold issue.
