Growing fodder for chickens

Watch several video. I found a method that I am going to use.

What all can a chicken survive on. The lady on one video said she only grows barley for chickens and rabbits. I wouldn't think that barley alone would be a sufficient diet, but I have not read up on chicken nutrition yet

I want to collect dandelion seeds to add to fodder this winter, I suspect they need to go in soil to grow though? Any input? I love this thread, I come to it quite often trying to learn all of this now so I'm more than ready when it gets cold!

I couldn't read every page to see if it was mentioned, but I watched a video one time where they sprayed their grasses with a baking soda and water mix to help prevent mold. Has anyone tried that?

Just went to my local mill. I purchased rye, thistle, and millit. Will all of these fodder the same?

They also had clover and sunflower seed. Everything was 1$ a pound lol

Wow, clover seed at $1 a pound! That's dirt cheap! Those seeds are tiny!

Yeah he said he would sell me any of the seeds I wanted for 1$ a pound. He knows I'm only getting a few pounds at a time. Off the top of my head he had

Thistle
Rye
Clover (red as well)
Stripped sunflower (and another type)
Millet

I'm still trying to figure out what the best for my birds is. I'm going to grow a fodder of each type that I have, then mix them all together and make a mixed fodder for more of a balanced diet

I grow millet for my birds. Plant it, cover it with screen till it's about 2" tall and unleash them on it. They absolutely love it. Grows really quickly and easily too.

I'm going to plant some that they can't get to and let it mature and pick the buds and give it to them as treats.

Where is your local mill? I'm guessing quite far from me but I have some road trips coming up!

I finally gave up on my fodder project. I couldn't get the mold under control and the amount of time I was spending on it made it not worthwhile.
