Growing potatos

Want to add purple potatos to the garden this year but have never grown them before. Any experienced gardeners out there that get good spud results? When to you cut up the potato and does it matter how many eyes are in each cube that you plant?

I plant 1 eye per cube. In fla. I already planted in Feb. I checked tonight and already have quite a few potatoes. I have never grown the purple though.

yep. In Fla you have have to have them in the ground by valentine's day... so mine are in pots in a greenhouse because it was FREEZING!!! humph. I have not had much luck with purple. Get them at the health food store unless you buy them from a seed supplier, otherwise they will have been treated not to sprout.
I have mold/ fungal issues, no matter what I put on them, so if they seem to be molding and not scabbing over, I just plant the entire potato. They did it on the victory garden, and I need a victory.

I always plant whole potatoes, they're cheap enough for our scale of a garden.

This is my first year with blue spuds. I'm also going to try the tire method this year.

I'm just doing one bed of whites this year, had them in the ground a few weeks ago, first of March/last of February, can't remember. I hacked them up with 2 eyes per chunk and let them callous in the sun for a few days before dropping them into the furrows. Covered them up with the soil 2 days after that. Have 2" tall greens sticking out right now from almost all of the chunks.

First time I've done potatoes since I lived in FL 20 years ago.

For those of you trying the tire method I have a question. How many quarters/ starts do you plant in each tire and how many tires do plan on using for each tire bed?
