Growing your own Sprouts 101

Well, some MEN do a little extra for their chickens - and I'm one of them! I don't think this is really spoiling them -it is a cheap feed compared to crumbles, and is very nutritious. I get lots of big eggs and they taste great and I can sell them easily. For the few minutes a day this takes, I think it's worth it.

OKAY! OKAY! SO I'M LAZY!

At least you are honest about it!

Buying a bunch of collards is really good for them and it IS easier than sprouting.

Most of the time I sprout for the chickens in the winter, when I'm growing sprouts for myself. I just stack a couple of extra trays on the sprouter. You pour the water in the top and it filters through to the bottom. Then you empty the bottom tray that's full of water, later. It's no extra work for me to have a couple of extra trays in the middle. I guess I'm lazy, too!

Yesterday I gave them a pile of snipped up wheat grass. The cats have been enjoying their's so much, I grew some extra. I just use the bag of wheat seed I use for sprouting and plant it pretty thickly, with a light covering of soil. I set it in a window and keep it watered. After it got tall enough, I just took a scissors and started snipping it off into a bowl. Wow, did it smell fantastic! I am so tired of winter, after 3 1/2 months of snow cover. Only 2 more months to go and I can plant peas.

I feed alfalfa sprouts and wheat grass to my goldfish, too. They eat them right up! All this sprout sandwich talk sent me out to the kitchen, to start more sprouts! I love a sandwich with a thick layer of alfalfa sprouts on it. Sometimes I don't even add meat or cheese, just the sprouts and the mayo! That's where my husband draws the line! He want meat in there!

I've been reading with interest the sprouting topic, and remembered that I had found a great link for making larger quantities of sprouts using pails.

This would be the greatest treat for my babies during cold snowy winters when they are stuck in their coop from November till April.
