I went out to get some shavings from the garage for the baby chicks and got distracted in the yard. My big girls were out free ranging. I heard my oldest hen (Nutmeg) start making this noise and the best way to describe it was like she was growling. The 3 others ran in the run with her and hid under the coop. She stood in the run crouched down and looking at something. I stood there and looked all around and couldn't see anything. Of course I was talking to them saying stuff like I don't see anything but I have locked your door you are ok. Then I thought maybe something was in the run so I go in and check out the eves and nothing. Then I noticed some cat birds going crazy. They were in the front yard somewhere so off I go to see if it was a hawk. I am looking in the trees across the street and the birds are going crazy. I still don't see anything until a huge bird flies out. I am pretty sure it was an Owl. It flew away from me so I couldn't see the face but it looked much bigger than the hawks we have hanging around and the they way it flew seemed different and the color was different than I see on hawks We did have a great horned owl several years ago hanging out. Needless to say it was pretty cool (as long as it wasn't going after my girls), the cat birds were chasing after it. This happened around 6:30 pm do owls hunt that early? Glad Nutmeg warned the others! Didn't know chickens growled!! Glad that I am not posting about something that happened.
Well about 2 hours later there was a peregrine falcon flying around and a block down a hawk hanging out!! I guess it was feeding time! Gonna have to put the girls up a little earlier!
