This little chick is about 5 weeks old. It has had it's eyes shut for a while but I soaked them today and they opened!(I had thought they were swollen shut) He is about the size of my newly hatched babies. The growth is on both side in the corners of the mouth. I soaked them and peeled some of it off today but it is attached. Maybe like a fungus? It has not stopped this little one from eating or drinking. I thought maybe this was a case of pox but I am not sure. Is there an topical ointment I can use on this? I thought of using colloidal silver. Thanks for looking.

Hmmm.......Unfortunately, I can't help you with exception of giving you a little bump in hopes someone more experienced will see this.

Good luck!

I can't tell because the picture is not clear or close enough, but I would keep him separate and wash wash wash your hands and everything else he's come in contact with. If it's pox, it will spread like wildfire through the flock and it is a PAIN to get rid of. Trust me on this.

Is it dry like a scab? If so, I'd keep Vaseline or something similar on it to keep it moist. Be very careful using ointments with pain relief. In fact, I wouldn't use them at all. Cyn lost her beloved Hawkeye that way. There is something in it that is deadly to birds.

what to do immediately

something you could do right away while you wait would be to add a tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar
to one gallon of water and only give that water for your pij to drink. That's had easily and cheaply enough and will help to keep the count down on the organism. You can also follow up with the medication with the same batch of water. I usually keep mine refridgerated and let sit in bowl after serving to get to room temperature. Apple Cider Vinegar would be best to use especially the
kind at Health Food Stores such as Bragg, however white vinegar is also purported to do the trick if that's all you have on hand right now. Start and then swap out for the Apple Cider Vinegar when you get it. Don't use the fancy ones like wine or with herbs. Garlic would be OK.
