Growth on leg of rescue roo- help!

Hi! Recently rescued a little bantam roo and am trying to figure out what's going on with his feet. It definitely looks like scaly leg mites but he also has a couple large growths as well. Also his legs are really red and raw. The growths are on bilateral hind claws, you can see it towards the bottom of the pic. The growth seems to cover the claw/toe completely. Is this all scaly leg mites or something else, too? In the pic is one leg- it is covered in Vaseline so keep that in mind but you can see the growth pretty well at the bottom of the pic. Should I soak it will it come off? Any ideas? Thank you!!! <3

When I had Scaley leg mites on my roo I cleaned his leg with an old tooth brush and dawn detergent. I then used nustock which I ordered on line in the same way you are using the Vaseline. I also used 4 drops of ivermectin 5%pour on for cattle that I got at my local tractor supply. It does a great job on mites. I applied it to the back of the neck directly onto the skin. Try to get it all on the skin as the feathers will just soak it in. I applied a second treatment 10 days later and dusted my roo coop with poultry dust . It got rid of the mites but the scales on the legs have to molt when the new scales came in they looked fine. I think that other area is also leg mite damage. Treat ASAP as the severe cases can lead to gangrene and loss of toes. Smothering them with Vaseline when it is that far advanced will not totally do the job.

I will definitely give what you wrote a try- poor little guy...he must be so uncomfortable....his legs are just so raw

What's the usual time frame for getting rid of the old scales and new scale growth? Do you wait for the old ones to molt or do you do any manual removal? Should i try and soak/take off that large growth?

For right now I would concentrate on the scaly mite problem. The foot looks raw and I think anymore scrubbing or soaking in harsh detergents will only make it worse. The growth can wait.

Brookliner said it all. Get some Ivermectin pour on and (because he is a bantam) apply 2 drops to the back of his neck. Make sure it is on the skin and not soaking into the feathers. If it soaks into the feathers it won't work.

This process is going to take time so be patient. I would soak his feet for approx 5 to 10 minutes a day in warm water and wash the feet with a antibacterial liquid soap like Betadyne. You can get it at any drug store in the first aid section. Put 1/4 tsp or less of Betadyne onto your wet hands and gently massage the feet for 1 min. Rinse well and let dry. Apply the vaseline or even neosporin in this case (to help heal) to the feet after they are thoroughly dried. You don't want to trap moisture near the skin.

The mites will be dead long before the feet look better. Again it takes time. Give him lots of good food so he has the strength to heal.

Love doesn't hurt either but I can see he has that.
