Grr...Salvation Army/Donation Rant

Our local Salvation Army Store has closed here in the second poorest counties in CNY. They left their collection bins though, now they pickup our items and truck them to Syracuse??? I only donate our items to local churches or our American Legion!

The hubby and I took some stuff into the SA once years ago and they told us they wouldn't accept it.
Took it to our local Good Will store and the only thing they have ever asked of me was if I bring in clothes just make sure there is no holes in them. It was told to me through a conversation with an employee who said they just hate it when someone brings in a huge bag of clothes so full of holes that they are not re-usable.

When we butcher a beef we donate the left over meat to Meals On Wheels that feeds the elderly. Now those people are always so happy to see us pull up because they never know what we might have in our cooler. One lady told us one year that they have some retired ranchers on their list and they had asked for a steak, we had 4 packages with 2 steaks a piece in them.
Made us feel good that that person got their request.

We have never had any problem's with the local "Goodwill" store's here.We don't have a Salvation Army except like 40 miles away. One Goodwill store in a Large town 80 miles from us has actualy been hurting for donation's since the bad economy.I personaly shop at thrift store's and I find use for many donated item's.I can't believe they turn stuff away.Daughter is gettin ready to donate some nicer baby item's here.Too bad there isnt something a program that will actually get decent used clothing and shoes to some of the really hurting children in other countries:tongue. They say dont try send clothes etc. Most of those children have never even seen a pair of shoe's. Grrrrrrrrr just my vent but...I personaly think a lot of the bigger "supposed" good faith organizations are making a lot more than they let on.They raise prices, they employ community service workers for free...I Dunno just something else to think about.

I put stuff in those big yellow bins, but they just take cloths and shoes.Books, I take a few at a time and add it to the resale book cart.Big stuff I put out a day or 2 before garbage day.

I have had all my stuff taken at SA,but I did not like the restricted donation times.

Goodwill has gotten expensive around here.Sad when you can't even afford resale shop prices!

this group is not as picky a certain number of things are not useable that happens newborns sometimes cannot use something for whatever reason .a few of the people who help at newborns knit or crochet things for the babies

they want cash donations... or stuff that is in high demand for the cash! I refuse to donate anything now.. i freecycle it, saves me a lot of headaches.

my uncle has a veggie garden every year, last year he decided to make it bigger and then donate the fresh produce to the food bank. When harvest time came around.. the food bank refused him because the produce was not bought at a store.

the manager of the food bank actually had the nerve to say cash is better.

he went to his church and they took it and made hampers. The local soup kitchen would not even take the potatoes and carrots

We only have 1 second hand store worth going to as the rest over charge, good will is actually cheaper then many in our city, most used kids pants go for $10, I can buy new for that.

odd,our city has a harvest share porgram, even the food banks except extra havested food from back yard gardens.

Any non-profit that cannot treat donors with RESPECT needs a major over-haul! Can you imagine how they treat they needy?
