Grrr...people and fish.

That is great Chicker!! I am glad you were there to save the fish. Yes they are not the smartest, but it does not mean they should be treated bad.

I always had a wide variety of fish. And Every time I went to the pet store I just had to save one.lol

I bought a beta from one that stored theirs in bowls that were even smaller then them. So all they could do is swim around in tight circles. Alot of them developed back problems. POOR things... It made me feel horrible. Well when I got him home I put him in a 5 gallon tank to live in. And it was all to himself. Even though they were spoiled they do not live for very long for me. I don't know why?! lol I also had a pet crab too. My Mother thought it looked like a spider. Well found out he was one of those that can get out of tanks!! Crabs are smart! lol. And I found him running around my room one day. It scared me!!

But now... sadly I can't be a fish saver. They can get me sick now

Now I can only eat them lol

I have seen that at carnivals and it hurts me to think that they are just thought of as a throwable pet.

So I am glad you are doing it.

Thanks for the kind words guys! They seem happy in my tiny tank for now, but I already have to clean it again! Between the fish and the snails, they sure make things dirty! Both are actually very dirty creatures to begin with!

I found a girl who is going to buy a tank today and she will take two. The other ones I think I will bring home and stick in my barrel pond. I think they should be ok at least until summer when my other friend said he would take some. I already have three large goldfish (about 4 or 5 inches, the comet even larger) in the pond and I don't want to overcrowd them, but at least I have options. I may keep one in with the snails, but I was hoping to get a pair of fancy guppies to keep. I may have to upgrade to a larger tank! LOL

Hey Chickerdoodle!
Congrats on saving those Betas, people see fish as more disposable than any pet, I think. When I was a kid I won one in the same way they were doing at your school he live 7 yrs until my sister poured hot water into his bowl instead of cool. His name was Ferdinand.
I know in AR it is illegal for fish or any animal to be given as a prize at carnivales and such. You might check your local laws online, don't depend on the police to know that one!
I agree with the person who said to get something going at your school. Petitions work, girl! They got PetSmart to stop selling rabbits and that is a BIG company.

I'd pull out my pocket knife (which isnt very pocket-sized) if I ever saw someone doing that to chicks. I've also been known to use some colorful language around those fish things. Last year, my TEACHER put BIG goldfish in bowls and just changed the water in chlorine. it was supposed to be educational. the students were putting sh*t in the tanks. i got a referral for hitting this kids head on the window!!!

Does your creek/ pond outlet into any natural water sources? Escaped goldfish (carp) wreak havoc on natural species. They are very messy and eat the eggs of fish that belong in the ecosystem.

Well, I don't know about that. Violence is NEVER the solution to a problem. A calm explanation and educating others is a much better way to take care of things. If you explain why it is bad, it is more likly they will learn and not do it again. Injuring someone just gets you in trouble, and doesn't teach anyone anything.

I always offer to take the extra goldfish home at the end of our fall fair. Every year I usually end up with 20-30 of them & put them in my 100 gallon tank with my other fish. For some reason tho, they are all gone the next morning. I have no idea what my group of piranha keep doing with them.

LOL. "Meat fish" does the same thing to baby gold fish. Sometimes, the fish is gone before I leaves my net.

I got him when he was a baby smaller than the gold fish in the feeder fish tank at the pet store... apparently they prey on gold fish in the ponds they use to breed feeders, and this little guy got stuck in with the fish to the store for delivery.

I hope you aren't serious about this. If you are, you should stop. Pulling out a knife on a person is also a good way to get yourself shot.

Violence isn't a great answer to a problem such as this. Please reconsider your actions.

Nevertheless, I've not been an animal person all my life. Only became one about... 2 years ago. That said, I didn't know that goldfish didn't belong in a bowl, nor did I really consider how they were feeling. To me, they were simply goldfish.

Now I have a little bit more respect/compassion for my fellow creatures, but I think a lot of other folks don't.

I used to feed goldfish to my tank of oscars and jack dempseys, but they gave my nice big fish parasites and I was never able to fully cure it. When I get oscars and jack dempseys again, I'll raise guppies for live food.

By the way and for what it's worth, beta fish in the wild live in depressions as small as a water buffalo's track and can live there most of it's life. It's one of the reasons they are so territorial. I say that even though I have a beta and he lives in a 2 gallon aquarium- plenty of room for him there. That said- I agree that a small cup is way too small for a gold fish and also that most people who acquire "pets" at these events have no business having them. Owning a pet takes a lot of research and planning beforehand.
