Guard Dogs

I just saw this and thought maybe to put in my two cents. On an acre in a hotter climate I would recommend a type of Cur (Mountain Cur or Blackmouth Cur) or possibly a Blue Heeler. I have had these breeds on a smaller place with good results. Of course you have to be diligent about training the dog but I think that would go without saying.

Ditto with MrsBachBach, Pyranees!...Haven't lost one to ground predator since he arrived...

Some dogs can be very effective against raptors. Some dogs take to it naturally, others require a little training. Having dogs respond to chicken alarm calls helps immensely with that activity.

I have to agree here. My son has a pointing labrador who is a fantastic hunting dog. He's also a great chicken guard. He patrols the property and comes running if he hears a chicken alarm. He's chased off eagles, hawks, foxes and coyotes.
