The gun is locked up at the PD pending an investigation, though it's likely to be just what it appears; an accident.
The guy was airlifted to one of the best hospitals in the state.

That is terrible. They never think it will happen to them, but to do something that stupid...it could have been someone else instead of him. Sheesh if you're going to own a gun, learn to use it right!!!

Maybe he didnt know it was loaded until he took it apart or trying to take it apart and it discharged. My hubby thought DUH! He was super duper picky about firearm safety and you would not want to be around him if he finds you doing what you are doing wrong. (he is EMT certified so he has some experience in that).

Hi! That's so sad. People are not as careful as they should be.
My brother (who is very careful and cautious with his guns normally) somehowkilled his tv when he was about to take apart a gun he was trying to 'repair'. Thankfully, his wife has a rule that he doesn't 'mess with guns' when the children are around.

Yep.
Guns are not something you can't afford to make mistakes with. There are 30+ guns in this house. Two of them I will handle - my own shotgun and the 22 rifle, because I've been taught proper handling of them. The others I wouldn't touch with a 10 ft. pole. I don't know enough about them to know I am absolutely safe with them.

Others have said that we're all human and we all make mistakes, but I agree with Grits, if you are going to handle a gun YOU MUST know the proper and safe way to do so. There is absolutly no room for mistakes with firearms.
