I went outside for a minute this morning and heard our chickens rioting frantically by the barn. I had just put Checker and Fuego outside in their pens as it was such a nice warm day and everyone else was free ranging around. I glanced down towards the barn and saw a flash of wings..dashed down there and the young (Cooper's) hawk was just sitting on the ground, gazing around as if to say "dang it, I missed!!!!" All the free ranging chickens had managed to take cover in time, poor Checker was the closest one in his pen and he was about catatonic, but ok. I went in the barn to try and do a head count. I came across Doodle roo hiding in a corner of the barn, huddling close to the body of a headless Golden Comet, I think it was Gretel. She was cold and stiff, we were gone all day yesterday, I think a hawk came in the barn after them yesterday or the day before, and grabbed her by the neck, while she was trying to hide, which is what they often do. The rest of the body was undisturbed, so he must've gotten scared and taken off after he killed her. I did not have any CD's hanging around the barn doorway...I do now. RIP, Gretel.
Last year two hawks came into our barn and killed one of our bantam roosters, same thing, when he was trying to hide. Then, they couldn't find their way out, til we opened more doors. You'd think I would've learned from the last time.
