all I've read- it seems like Elvira should be the pullet and our other the roo.... am I wrong? Maybe we'll never know till they crow!

That is the way it works with barreds, but yours have a little of everything in them. But i believe you have only one pullet, the first. the first barred has EE in it likely and is without question a roo, the second barred is much more barred and may be a little slow to produce comb but is likely a male too. normally male barreds are lighter, but when they are mixed, or some other barred than rock then this may not hold true. You had worse luck than i did, assuming you were wanting pullets. I had a 8 to 4 ratio, roos to pullets.
