Hi everyone, very new here...

I have aquired 5 indian runner ducks as rescues a few weeks ago, having no history from the previous keeper i am very happy with them. They are lovely natured ducks, a little skittish but very healthy and very comical!!

They are still young and very beautiful but can anyone tell me what colours you would call them?!
How old they might be roughly (im guessing 4 months?) and if you think any of them might be boys/girls!! (im rubbish at telling ducks apart, unless i go by quacks!)

(Please note that the two shallow tub trugs are their temporary ponds, the boys are getting the digger out this week to build them their own luxury pool:D )

Thanks

I'm new to ducks too. Don't know the color terms yet but I'll be lurking here to see what we learn. I adopted a black runner and I know for a fact he is a 'HE'. We caught him doing the deed with my pekin which we now know is a hen. I've read that it is difficult to sex until they moult then the drake gets it's curly tail feather. The quacking and gutteral noises help too. I just waited till I caught them laying or you know what. I have a kahki campbell that I'm not sure yet if it is a he or she. All of my ducks are 5 mos. old. They are a lot of fun! Enjoy!

Lucky you! I looked for months for Runner rescues, and never found any. I ended up buying 2 with other breeds, and am still keeping an eye out for some more. I love all the breeds, but these just crack me up for some reason! Yours are beautiful!!

Those are gorgeous!! Yup, black, white, & blue. They make a very striking grouping together. The white markings are considered a "fault" in show-quality birds, but I think they're gorgeous. I'm actually going to be working on developing a "painted" or "multi-color" Runner starting next summer. I love tri-colors with random markings, and I love Runner ducks, so that's my goal.

Congrats on your rescue. They're great birds. And those girls are going to give you lots of eggs next year (and probably some this year too, once they settle in and feel comfortable with their new home).

Oh, I forgot to add--those trugs are perfect for water containers. If you want to build them a pond, great--but it's not necessary. Mine have access to a lake during the day, but most of the time they are perfectly happy to stick around the backyard and play in the child's wading pool I provide them with. Wading pools are great because they're easy to empty and clean regularly. But they don't even *have* to have a pool to enjoy life--it looks like they've got plenty of forage there, and a trug full of water to dip their heads in and drink is all they strictly have to have to be content. Still, they do love a good bath.

I did think there might be a black white and blue thing going on but because of the splodges i wasnt sure!!
I know what you mean about splodges being "faults" though.... they really make the ducks look so individual and pretty, how do they class that a fault?!?!!

As for the female/male watch this space then!!!!

The pond is about the size of 4 shallow tub trugs and is a big plastic container so it sould be pretty easy to clean out :S. I was happy with just buying several tubtrugs for ponds (one each!) but the boys insist whilst they have the digger rented they may as well build me a pond
