We rescued some runners in July.5 total and we kept 3. We kept 1 blue and 2 black, 1 of the black ones has white just at the neck area. This one soon got the name Tux. We were sure of sex, but I've heard at least 2 of them quack, so I think we got 2 girls. Unfortunately the blue has wry tail, so won't be good to breed with. The black ones are just starting to get the green in their wings. It's sooo pretty. Congrats on rescuing the runners. They are awesome!
Very late update here....
I must be the luckiest person on Earth as they turned out to be one drake and four girls!! So no one had to go to a new home
The darkest blue is the drake, he has got very big, has a lovely low raspy quack and a super curly tail!
The girls havent started laying yet... I keep telling dad "they will lay soon" but no such luck!!
Their names are Darcy, Daiquiri (black), Angelica(whote), Lillian and Susie (blue "twins")
The pond was finished months ago, I tried to clean it out over summer and decided it was a little too much of a smelly and difficult job so Im planning to invest in a heavy duty filter pump this summer
Very lucky on your percentage of girls! Would love to see an updated pic of them. I'd think your girls should be laying very soon. We rescued ours at the end of July(2-3 weeks old then) and they started laying mid January.
I will get a new pic in the morning though they are a little dirty at the moment as the ground has turned to mud with the weather and anyone who owns ducks will know how hard it is to stop them sploshing around in every puddle they find!!
I am so proud of them, they have become less timid, they will split up as a group to wander around the pen now and wont completely run away if you go near them now!! They just watch you suspiciously now
The other day there was an awful noise coming from their pen when i was throwing corn to the chickens, i looked round to see them all looking in my direction so i threw them some corn but they still were staring... then i realised they were excited about the tub full of straw near their pen! I threw some in and they went crazy over it... i should of known as my ducks always go crazy for playing in a bail of straw but i didnt realise they were clever enough to twig what was in the tub near their pen!
The girls have started to head bob constantly at Darcy so its only a matter of time before he tries to "drown them"
When they start laying im hoping to try incubating some ducklings.... but I wont be able to keep them so watch this space if your wanting some fluffies
They are gorgeous. No wonder you are so happy with them.
It is my opinion that ducks are little geniuses however like Einstein, are total pillocks at the same time!
May I make a guess? The blue with the white splash around the bill and on the neck has darker feathers on its head and primaries, so I am thinking he will turn out to be a drake. They often have darker mature markings than the females. So I am guessing, two, that the other blue is a duck (female).
By now their quacks or lack of quacks would be giving them away, yes? But when they all cluster together, it may be difficult to tell who just said what.
They are lovely, lovely birds.
I am expecting my blacks and chocolates in a little over a month.
