We have two Jumbo Pekins, about three weeks old. Their feathers are starting to come in, and we are having a blast trying to guess the gender of the kids, Genghis and Kublai. We understand that the gender wont be truly revealed until the tail feathers come in, but we may be catching on to some clues! (or, we are just over analyzing and driving ourselves to the point of insanity. [IMG]) Strange though, how we have been quite enjoying this guessing game. So, we wanted to share the "clues" with everyone and see if maybe you all could help us!
    So, here are the clues.

    1. Tail feathers! On the left is Genghis, who's feathers (however bald they may be) are keeping a permanent curl. While Kublai's are always straight.

    2. I'm not sure about this one, it's just a guess on our part: Kublai tends to lay down more than Genghis does, which I thought was a female trait (I observed this behavior when living with my mothers adult Pekins, one male, one female)

    3. Body structure. Genghis, right, seems to have more of a barrel chest, while Kublai, left, has a sleeker shape. Also, Genghis puffs up when he's confronted by his daddy.. er.. Not-Mom.

    4. And last, behavior. Genghis seems to be the brave one, standing up to any opposing socks or anything that may get in (his?) way. Kublai is a bit more skittish, a little less brave.

    So guys, whaddaya think?

As much fun as it to guess none of those things you listed mean anything. Sorry. Have either one started to quack at all or just peeping? They are super cute even in the scraggly stage.

Well, darn. Thank you! And yes! Once. We heard a strange sounding peep last night. It was almost a honk. But other than that, they are just peepers. :)

Yeah they do. Theyve easily grown 5x their original size. They are eating, pooping, and swimming machines. :)

When my drakes are youngsters they lay down a lot more than the females but my ducklings are outside with their moms, so maybe you can't use that analogy with yours. But here it's girls always busy, boys kinda laying around.

I have pekins and it's been my experience than hens will start to quack first.
    And hens are loud!
While drakes have a more raspy croaky quake.
