Day 3 candling? I thought i had it bad and im just on my second year of raising chickens. To each their own but candling that early seem's dangerous to me. The less you handle the egg's the better percentage it will have of hatching. I learned that first hand, one of my first hatches i candled almost every day...had a 40% hatch...next incubation, candled just 3 times....had a 90% hatch rate.

I candled day 3 (was actually day 10 for the first batch which ended up all being duds- I'd only candled them 1 time before. I think the roo's way too big for the hens, like double the size, so I figured they were anyway) because I needed to weed out the duds anyway & won't have a chance to do again until late Sunday, & maybe not even then. I don't plan on candling daily or even nearly so, but this is my very first hatch, & I was just trying to learn a bit. I saw several videos of day 3-4, so didn't figure it was that bad. I planned on doing tonight- day 4 (then remembered we had plans so did it last night), then 10 (get rid of the duds @ that point), then maybe like day 17. I will be out of town for Memorial Day after that, including when they hatch.

Oh well. I guess there's always next time. I did take a quick look when they first arrived upside down in the mail, of course, so if I do it this way, it'll be 4 times total. That sound ok? Thanks for the tip on not overhandling. I would like to learn from others' experiences when possible, & in doing so, avoid the same mistakes. I guess day 10's a good day to clean house on the clears? Long enough if it's gonna do something, but soon enough to prevent explosions if not? I had a couple of folks tell me that. That was why I was asking the other lady why to throw @ 5 days. Trying to figure the deal out! I mean, if somebody can tell for sure that's a good idea so the others will have a better shot, then tell me how to tell! My girl's barely covering the 11 sometimes...Should I just toss the one w/ the light cracking? What about the "stuck to the side" one? Ok. So somebody tell me something...

i was using a heat lamp and it got really off so i was going to let it cool off and forgot about it all night...so i figured they died...cracked them open and 9 out of 11 were starting to form 3 were my own silkie eggs and i could see the embryo growing rest was just veins

Wow-is anybody still doing the hatch-a-long? It's been a while since anyone checked in. Well, my eggs are doing alright. As mentioned before, the 4 eggs from our own girls were duds, we got shipped eggs under broody a week after she started, with 5 looking great @ end of Day 3. At this point, it's the middle of day 11, & the 5 are now doing egg acrobatics - so cool!!! I have yet to open the "duds", which range from just a small black speck to large black clump with what could be a blood ring (not thin though, rather thick & menacing looking- hope it doesn't stink!) but none of them show any signs of life. I kinda don't want to open, but know I should for the sake of learning the candling ropes, I guess...So hopefully we will have 5 little Light Sussex babies in the next week & a half or so! Hope to hear from the rest of you soon & good luck!

I have candled mine and all the EE's are good to go. All the silkies are clear but two.

They are young hens and the first of the eggs. Got more silkie eggs from the hens, cracked them open and have the buckeye in all of them. Sent eggs off in the mail to see how they would do before I new most of mine were clear. My shipping skills are good none cracked. Now I'll see if hers hatch. Does anybody have any good news?

Good morning I just set some of my eggs. 9 Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks, 6 Blue and Black Copper Marans, 5 Golden Cuckoo Marans, 16 Black Copper Marans. So my hatching date should be 6/10. These are all shipped eggs and a few have not so good air cells but most of them looked great before I set them now I don't candle until 7 days so I will be checking back on the 27th.

Just saw the thread. I set 16 of my own lav orp "project" eggs on the 5th. Candled on the 15th - 1 rotten , 1 quitter. Will be putting in the hatcher on Sunday!!!!

Candled mine yesterday, out of 43 I have 30 that are some I got off of a guy local....leghorns, orphingtons, silkies, RIR, and a few others. Also I have 4 of my OWN, with my ameracuana EE/ naked neck silkie rooster!! Then there are the 4 that are ?? cause they are so dark I cant see well enough to know that they aren't good...They will be taken out of the turner on Monday for a hatch this coming weekend!! Now gotta move the 3 week olds to a bigger pin....or a different pin...
